The Sanctuary of Hekate Potnia Theron
The Sanctuary of Hekate Potnia Theron was founded under the auspices of the Covenant of Hekate in 2023 at the initiative of Lotus - Keybearer of the Covenant of Hekate now retired - and is now led by Sara, the keeper of the Sanctuary and its Sacred Grounds, Keybearer and Torchbearer of the Covenant of Hekate.
The Sanctuary is an online sanctuary open to all devotees of Hecate. In our practice, we honor Hecate as Potnia Theron, the Ancient Mother, Lady of Animals, the Formless Fire, and the Mediator between all realms, the One who connects the Earth to the Cosmos. We focus on building a relationship with the Goddess through a practice grounded in connection with the Earth and Spirits, following an ecliptic path that unites Theurgy and Druidry, exploring the connections and similarities between these seemingly different approaches to the divine.
The Sanctuary hosts and maintains the Sacred Grounds of Hekate, an astral landscape open to all devotees. Our aim is to offer a safe space in which to pray to Hecate and practice her magic, even when the outside world does not allow it. The Sacred Grounds, consisting of the Grove, the Garden, and the Temple, are linked to completely free guided meditations and visualizations, available to all.
We also share content on History, Mythology, Magic, and Devotion through meetings and courses, many of which are completely free, in both Italian and English. Our goal is to help devotees draw closer to the Goddess and to foster, especially in Italy, the growth of a broader community willing to embrace the Five Virtues of Hekate and act as a bridge between ancient knowledge and the present. In this context, we also manage the Italian Covenant of Hekate, the official CoH group for Italian speakers.
The sanctuary also accepts prayer requests from devotees in difficulty, completely free of charge.
Ours is an ongoing journey, forged step by step, in a lifelong pursuit. Recognizing the importance of the past and ancient tradition, which we study carefully and rigorously from the sources, we embrace the modern world and its need for true, authentic, and respectful connection with Nature, the mother of all things. The materials we offer are the fruit of our labor, our research, and our direct experience.
Our training, like our approach, is very eclectic. Sara is a Torchbearer and Keybearer in the CoH, an Ovate in the OBOD, and has studied, among the others, with Sorita d'Este, Jason Miller and Jack Grayle.
Who we are
We are an eclectic group of devotees, a small international community who worship Hecate as the Lady of the Cosmos. Our voice seeks to bring Hecate into today's world.
Sara, Keybearer and Torchbearer of the Sanctuary
Despite growing up in a typical Catholic Christian environment in a small Italian town, I've always felt a strong connection to nature and its nocturnal, chthonic aspects, and a deep connection to the Greco-Roman pantheon, which I've studied since I was 10. From childhood, I developed a strong interest in esotericism and the world of witchcraft. Apparently, Art was also interesting to me, since I found my first tarot deck in an Easter egg.
In the 1990s, I became interested in Wicca, learned my first rituals, and performed my first spells. Thanks to a trip to France, to the Brocéliande forest, I encountered Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, and my interest in the Celtic world, which represents the other side of my soul, was sparked. After all, I was born in Lombardy and live in Paris, so one couldn't expect anything other than a Gallo-Roman approach to the universe. Over the years, I've read everything from Crowley to grimoires, from Gimbutas, Frazer, and Murray to Greek philosophical texts.
After years spent studying Greek, Latin, and classical archaeology at university, I fell in love with iconography and iconology, so I decided to study Art History, learning to understand the power of images and symbols and how they travel through the centuries.
Then came the crisis. After a very difficult time in my personal life, I entered a deep spiritual crisis, a dark night of the soul that lasted almost 10 years. I threw everything away: my books, my notebooks, my drawings, my hymns. I had lost my inner fire and all my interest in the spiritual world. Hecate, however, had not lost her interest in me, and in 2019 her calling became so strong that it could no longer be ignored.
So I resumed my studies, first alone, then with Giorgia Farano and OBOD. At the time, I was already living in Paris—the city that has adopted me—and where the Goddess Sequana gathered me, brought me back to Mother Earth, to my Ancestors, and to Hecate, who guided me out of the cave where I had locked myself away for years. From that moment on, Her torches have never abandoned me and have illuminated all my studies. I have attended courses by Sorita d'Este, Jack Grayle, Jason Miller, and many others.
In 2022, after years of gravitating toward the CoH without ever joining, I decided to become a full member. Within it, I met Lotus, my mentor and guide. Today, as a Torchbearer and Keybearer, my desire is to share what I've learned with others and create, in Italy too, a community dedicated to Hecate, open to all and truly inclusive. A place where diverse people, from different traditions and with diverse experiences, can meet, talk, discuss, and learn from one another.
